Unfortunately our latest show, Champions of the Moa Feather has had to be cancelled. The show was scheduled to be a part of the Christchurch Body Festival 2010, but because of the earthquake the festival was cancelled. We played with the idea of putting it in independently, but limited time and resources meant that it just wasn’t possible. It is disappointing as a lot of hard work went into the show and some very enjoyable moments in rehearsals were had.

A huge thanks to those involved, which admittedly wasn’t a large number of people, but your efforts were much appreciated.

Physical Theatre Classes

Hey,There has been a lot of interest in physical theatre classes running so am putting it on!

Here’s the rundown:

8 weeks of 2hr classes

wednesday nights 6.30-8.30pm (starts 26th May, that’s next week)
the IAM Centre (behind the theosophical society on cambridge tce, opposite centennial pool)
$10 p/wk (that’s pretty awesomely cheap)

The classes:
Will be focused on exploring physical theatre through text and script.
- the relationship with physicality and words
- tension

- devising, generating material, editing
- ensemble

Each class will have a warm up and then workshop various ideas of performance based around the body. After a couple of classes we will then start to select text and begin exploring, interpretting, devising and transforming that text.

Doesn’t matter if you have heaps of experience or very little. If you think you want to get involved or want more info EMAIL ME. and if you think there are others who would be interested pass it on to them also :)

I need to know ASAP!

Invisibility!

Well, the next project is underway for Liminal Theatre. You may or may not know that the Fair Trade Fortnight starts very soon and Liminal Theatre has been asked to take part. Last year we put on the play Sweet As? This year we are doing something a little different.

It’s always a tricky balance taking on political theatre, you don’t want to ram messages down peoples throats, yet you wan’t to keep some message clear in the show. Which is why we are going to put on a piece of Invisible Theatre, or incidental theatre.

Invisible Theatre, for those die hard theatre buffs, comes from the Tree of Augusto Boal’s Theatre of the Oppressed. It is a form of political theatre, which seemingly rises out of an everyday situation, in a place that normally wouldn’t be used as a theatre space.

This years theme for Fair Trade Fortnight is ‘The Big Swap’, swapping your everyday products or consumables for the fair trade version (FYI if you haven’t already eaten the trade aid chocolate, try it, pure bliss). The invisible theatre is going to be in the style of Improv Everywhere’s ‘frozen Grand Central Station’, but obviously on a much smaller scale, and with it’s own twist for the fortnight.

Wrapping up Buffoons

Buffoon’s Birthday is all done. What a huge adventure! From starting all the way back in August last year we made it through workshops, interviews, making masks, casting, rehearsals, getting to the Fringe festival, a christchurch season and managing to keep our sanity … i think.

Buffoon’s was a risky project, especially for a young theatre company trying different ideas and theatrical concepts. We certainly learnt a lot through the whole process and will use this experience to strengthen the company and it’s endeavours. Thank you to all who came and supported the show and cast.

Now that we are in Post Production for Buffoon’s we are also starting the ball rolling on another couple of ideas. A ‘site specific’ piece and another physical theatre production. Both are very exciting and completely different from each other and what we have previously done. More details will be revealed soon.

Liminal News: In the pipeline

Time for news of a different kind. Liminal is currently in the planning stages for another couple of shows. Can’t divulge too many details as it’s way too early, but we are taking a little drive down memory lane and looking at re-imagining a couple of characters from the past. If all goes ahead, it will be the most fun you can ever have in vertical transport.

RDU Interview

I had an interview on RDU this morning promoting Liminal’s season of Buffoon’s Birthday. A very fun chat, it’s nearly a year since Liminal did had an interview there about Sweet As? Check out the interview here

Also, we opened our Christchurch season tonight. The cast have poured everything into it, and I have to say it was their best performance thus far. It was a delight to see them. So COME AND SEE THE SHOW! Support these guys as they sweat, jump and guffaw on stage. They need you! :)

wellington wrap

Well, we made it to the Fringe. Put on a show and survived the madness. It was definitely a huge experience, learnt a lot, met some great people, people that we knew and hadn’t seen for ages and didn’t go crazy in each others company over 5 and half days.

Highlights were arriving to wellington at 7.30am and turning up to the theatre with all our travel gear, ready to pack-in our show. Watching the cast roam in their masks and costume through Cuba Street, some of the reactions from the public were priceless.

Opening Night

We finally got there! after months of planning and rehearsing we had our first show at BATS in the Fringe Festival last night. We had a great crowd, good numbers and the show went very well. Such a relief to actually have it underway. Today the cast will be character roaming around wellington centre handing out flyers in mask and costume. Then we have a bit of wellington fun and check out some sites before getting back to the theatre for the second night.

So far so good. May it continue.

Fringe!

We made it to Wellington. All of us basically lacking sleep but we managed to arrive, go strait to the theatre and do most of the lighting for the show. We have another 4hrs today to power through it all before opening the doors and letting the audience in. So far so good!
